DENNY L. STARKS
UX RESEARCHER & DESIGNER
01 about

Hi!
I'm a comic book nerd who also enjoys human-centered research and design.
My current research examines how Transgender Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (TBIPOC) communities build and sustain infrastructures of care that enable collective safety, joy, and self-determination amid systemic neglect and everyday violence. Drawing on an intersectional assemblages framework, I analyze how interdependence and radical care operate as both survival strategies and acts of resistance. I introduce the concept of safety labor, the emotional and cognitive work of managing misrecognition, assessing risk, and mitigating harm, as a shared, community-held practice rather than an individual burden. Through community-centered and participatory methods, my work highlights how TBIPOC people transform survival into flourishing, reframing safety not as the absence of harm but as the presence of belonging and possibility.

02 philosophy
Be.
I believe it's essential to pause and reflect on the work and needs of the users during the design process
Do.
I want to help create positive change in the world. I want my research and designs to positively impact the users' lives and give them some fulfillment.
Have.
I am continually realizing my biases and trying to unpack them, which will help me moving forward as a researcher. Pausing and reflecting will help me grow as a researcher and designer and create positive impacts on the world.
